East Village & Greenwich Village East Village used to be really gritty and rough, but it's become incredibly gentrified and hip. It's somewhat expensive, ethnically diverse and full of NYU students.

Lower East Side The Lower East Side has a similarly young, trendy atmosphere to the Village, but minus the high rent prices. Chinatown is the hotspot within this neighbourhood: large and lively, with great restaurants and food shopping, as well as a few parks that are great for people-watching. |

Tribeca Tribeca - "Triangle Below Canal Street" - is a common place to spot celebrities: lots of rich families and aging rock stars live here, in ex-industrial buildings that have been converted to enormous homes. Yet you'll still find a few struggling artist types here. It has a quiet community feeling and is rarely crowded, and its cobblestone streets and loft-style buildings add to its desirability. |

Soho It's hard to believe that Soho was ever run-down. It used to be an industrial area, but then in the 1960s, like so many other places in the city, the artists moved in and were followed by celebrities. Its architecture is stunning, but it no longer has its avante-garde bohemian atmosphere. It's too gentrified for that. |
