Five missed calls. The constant vibration feature on his phone was turned off after the third time it buzzed. There was absolutely no separating himself from his parents. They insisted on everyday conversation to make sure he was okay. He could understand the whole empty nest syndrome that most mothers and fathers went through with the older children, but they were taking it to an extreme level. Just over three hundred miles away and it still felt like he was suffocating. By no means had they downgraded their over protectiveness, it was really starting to annoy him to the point that he screened all of their phone calls. He can only imagine the aggravation and headache he was giving them just by doing so. Although, he should probably pick up the next time because he would not be surprised if they sent someone on the next flight or ferry to find him. It was just a large stretch of ocean that separated the two countries, so it didn’t take very long to get here. They were probably driving both of his younger siblings just as crazy with both of them attending Vineheart Academy this year. It was the very school he had wanted to go to when he was thirteen, but at that time his parents were even worse than they were now.
Class had just let out and Jaakob had about an hour and a half to spare before his next one started. He politely rejected an invitation for a study group in the library and bid his schoolmates farewell. As much as he loved studying, he didn’t think he could open up another book so soon. It was the perfect time to grab something to eat at a restaurant. He had completely skipped breakfast this morning to arrive on time to his early morning class, the professor didn’t tolerate tardiness and he was not about to shift onto the guy’s bad side. The crisp air fall air greeted him when he stepped outside and as he made his way across the courtyard, he took out his cell to have another talk with his mom about giving him some space. The walk to the coffee shop was approximately ten minutes, which was the same amount of time he spent chatting up his folks. The talk was a wasted effort because as soon as he hung up, he knew the incessant calls would start all over again tomorrow. He exchanged his cell for his headphones in his bag drowning out the chattered noise of the shop as he entered it. The line wasn’t too long and he used that time to figure what he wanted from themenu. Hot coffee with a ham and cheese melt is what he ended up ordering.
The trouble with lunchtime rush was trying to find a table. He surveyed the room for an empty place to sit, but instead found his gaze locked on a girl, a very familiar looking girl. She was sitting with someone - her mother, perhaps. Snatching off his headphones, he took a few steps closer to where she was and was finally able to place a name with the face,"Annalie?”
