Avalon sighed, brushing long, dark hair from her face as she turned the page in her notebook. She was writing furiously in it, as the bakery was particularly slow. There were no orders to take, no cupcakes to bake. It was just.. like someone had forgotten to tell everyone they were open. Av didn't mind much. She got paid either way. She was busy, anyways, writing more of the fiction novel that she wanted to get published someday. It was a supernatural genre, particularly centering around an angel, a demon, a human, and a vampire.
She frowned, not sure of how to get the characters to the next point in the plot that they were supposed to be. She was growing frustrated, as writing was always hard for her when the characters didn't cooperate. She shook her head, putting the pen and notebook under the counter with her other belongings, deciding she'd go and start making a cheesecake. She got it mixed and poured into the tin, then put it in the industrial refridgerator, right in time to hear the bell chime on the door. She walked out front, a familiar face walking in.
It was Mackenzie Carlisle, her best friend in the entire world. A grin lit up her face. "Oh my god, hey!" she greeted, running out from behind the register to envelop the girl in a hug. "Hey." she said again. "How are you? Did you come here to see me? Can I get you anything? You have to pay for it, but..." her voice trailed off. Kenzie and Ava had been best friends since they were about twelve and thirteen years old, and now, here they were, eighteen and nineteen. Six years of friendship, and the two were still inseparable. They were like sisters, only closer. Avalon would know, because she had a sister, but she was still closer to Mackenzie.
They hadn't seen each other in a few weeks though, each of them busy with work and school, but Avalon had just began her summer break, finishing her freshman year of college a little earlier than the others at NYU thanks to a lot of Advanced Placement classes in high school. She hugged Kenzie again, eyes bright. "But seriously, how are you? How's Micah? How's everything? I've missed you so much.

Just a few more classes stood between Mackenzie and summer break. She loved her classes at AMDA (American Musical and Dramatic Academy), but she was completely stressed out and ready for a break. She really didn’t have anything special planned for the summer, other than teaching dance classes at her old dance school and subbing for other dance schools around the city. She knew she could count on her friends and brother for a few fun outings to the Hamptons and other places like that, so she wasn’t worried about being bored this summer.
Finally her teacher announced class was over and Mackenzie shot out of her desk. It was her first night off from teaching all week and she was thrilled to finally have a night to herself. Sure, she probably should work on her dance solo for her final evaluation at the end of week, but she really didn’t want to think about anything school related. After a quick stop home to change and drop off her school bag, Mackenzie decided to head into the city to visit Avalon. She hadn’t seen her best friend in a while due to conflicting schedules and she really missed her.
The ferry ride over seemed to take forever. The subway once she got into the city wasn’t much better. She was just about to burst from the thrill of seeing her best friend when she finally got to Times Square. She practically ran the few blocks to the bakery where Avalon worked and burst through the front door. She squealed when she saw her best friend. ”Avalon! Ahh I’ve missed you!” She embraced the girl tightly feeling a little guilty for not being around more.
”Ugh, I really shouldn’t have anything with evaluations coming up, but I would kill for a cupcake! One can’t hurt, right?” She giggled a little and walked over the counter. Since the shop was completely empty, she hopped onto it and turned so she could talk to Avalon better. ”Oh, I’m good! Busy as all hell, but just a few more days till summer for me! Micah’s good too. Haven’t seen him much either. We keep missing each other at home with our schedules. How’s Preston? Ahh we all need to get together soon! I miss everyone!” She took a breath realizing she was babbling again. She tended to do that when she got excited.

Avalon grinned, "Okay. I just finished icing a batch a second ago. They're on sale for a dollar fifty today." she explained, listening to Kenzie rattle on with an amused smile as she went back into the kitchen - hot, still, from the heat the ovens put off during her last baking session, and plucked a red velvet cupcake from the rack, cream cheese frosting piled high atop it, chocolate sprinkles on top. It was a gold mine for calories, of course, but it was about to be summer time, and the girls could burn those calories by swimming, jogging, or dancing together - three activities they always enjoyed.
She returned, handing the cupcake to her friend and biting into another one that she'd gotten for herself, sitting on the counter beside her as she nodded. "Oh yeah." she said, swallowing the bite she had in her mouth. "Definitely. We could all go to, like, the beach or something." She nodded. "In Staten." she shrugged a shoulder, and then grinned.
She thought about the four of them and their friendship. It had begun with Mackenzie and Avalon, meeting in the choir in seventh grade, Mackenzie a soprano and Avalon an alto, the two ended up getting a solo together and, in the middle of their perfectly pitched harmony, they realized they'd make the best of friends. At their first sleepover, twelve-year-old Avalon was introduced to fifteen-year-old Micah, and it was crush at first sight for her, although he was too busy with high school things to see them as more than kids.
At their second sleepover, Avalon introduced Kenzie to her older brother,then-fourteen-year-old Preston, and then they introduced the brothers to each other. Somehow, everything clicked perfectly, and they became what the girls referred to as the Fantastic Four. Avalon was the Invisible Woman, due to the way she was so reserved and kept to herself. Kenzie was the Human Torch, because he was the Invisible Woman's brother, and was hot, hot hot! Preston was Mister Fantastic, as he is quite smart. And then, due to the way Micah thinks his age makes him better than everyone, the girls dubbed him The Thing, just to make fun of him.
"I'm so glad it's about to be summer again." Avalon sighed happily, taking another bite of the cupcake. "It's about time we get to hang out."

Mackenzie groaned a bit. ”With you working here, I’m lucky I don’t weight 200 pounds!” She laughed as she watched Avalon go into the back. When she came back out with the red velvet cupcake, Mackenzie could feel herself start to drool. ”Oh you know me too well. I can never say no to a red velvet cupcake!” She slipped some money on the counter and took the cupcake from her friend. She took a big bite and closed her eyes in bliss. ”Oh Ava, this is your best one yet!” She loved coming into the shop when Avalon was working. Her desserts were always the best out of everyone that worked here. But then again, they were best friends. She might be a bit biased.
”Oh I’m dying to go to the beach this summer! We should see if we can all go out to the Hampton’s for a week or something coming up. I’m sure we could work something out!” Her favorite summer memories were always the vacations they took to the Hamptons together. It was rare to have such a close knit group of friends, but somehow all four of them were a perfect fit together. They were all so different that they each complimented each other perfectly. Mackenzie loved just spending time with all of them. She knew that the time would come where they would all go different ways in life, but for now she wanted to enjoy every moment she could.
She nodded as Avalon spoke. ”Oh I’m so ready for summer. I don’t want to have to think about anything academic for the next three months.” She really did love school, and her school didn’t really focus that much on the academic side, but everyone needs a break. Especially when they go to a school that’s so competitive. She was sick of the cattiness the other girls had. All she wanted to do was perform. She didn’t care about parts or anything like that. But all of the other girls were willing to do whatever it took to beat each other. It was for that reason that Mackenzie was thinking about transferring schools. She hadn’t told anyone yet, not even Avalon, but she was seriously considering it. NYU had a good musical theatre program and she would have a bit more free time to herself. She took a deep breath and turned back to Avalon.
”Ok so here’s my dilemma. I kind of might, um, want to transfer out of AMDA. What do you think?” She knew Avalon’s brother, Preston, attended NYU and she could always ask him for advice. ”It’s not that I don’t like the school, cause I do! I just am so sick of the competitiveness, ya know? I could always, well go to NYU or something.” She shrugged and looked down a bit. She thought about Preston again and felt herself blush slightly. She had always had a little bit of a crush on him growing up, but she never told Avalon that. She knew he didn’t look at her like that, since she was his little sisters best friend and he thought of her like a sister as well. But she just couldn’t help the feelings she had for him. The thought of going to school with him made her feel a bit giddy inside, but she had to keep telling herself that wasn’t the reason she was transferring. She looked back at Avalon, hoping she didn’t suspect anything about her feelings. ”I don’t know. Maybe I should just stick it out or something. It is a good school and all..”
