"Never tell me the odds."
The Basic Facts
FULL NAME. Thomas Andrew Carraway
AGE. 28
OCCUPATION. Private Detective; Thomas started off wanting to join the military, but was turned down because of a heart condition. It's nothing serious, but it was enough to keep him out. He turned to the law instead, and first joined the police. He was a cop for three years, before he was involved in a bad shooting that nearly paralyzed him. It was enough to turn him away from policing, and he still has mixed feelings about his resignation. He hates cowardice, and often despises himself and his decision. Tom ended up becoming a private detective, and it turns out he happens to be very good at it. He's been hiring himself out for two years now, and still works closely with his former department.
SEXUAL ORIENTATION. Heterosexual. Thomas is definitely a ladies' man. He's not a womanizer, there's just something about him. It might be his Irish brogue, or his good looks, or his gentlemanlike manner, but he's definitely a charmer. He was engaged once, but his fiance left him after the shooting; unable to bear the idea of spending the rest of her life a cripple. Tom is still bitter over it; he often turns to drinking. His bitterness never affects his manners, however. Polite as he is, his fuse is only so long, and he has a sharp tongue when provoked.
ASTROLOGICAL SIGN. Scorpio
PERSONALITY TRAITS.
Intuitive: It's hard to fool Tom. He's clever and sharp; very little escapes him. He has a knack for simply knowing things. His hunches have never lead him wrong, and he always follows his instincts. He notices the smallest things, and is able to read a person like one might read a book. He finds people-watching fascinating, loves riddles, and is very rarely wrong.
Reserved: Thomas was never an open book. He's very modest and quiet; he says little about himself. There's always something to learn about him, he's enigmatic in that sense. It takes years to truly know him, to gather up enough bits and pieces to really understand him. He's prone to mood swings, but they can be hard to spot, since he's so good at concealing his thoughts and feelings.
Dry: Tom has a dry, witty sense of humor that comes across as charismatic. Not everyone appreciates his humor, but he doesn't really care. Most of the time it goes over people's heads, so he typically keeps his comments to himself. He can be sarcastic and downright clever, but it's usually in a quiet way. He doesn't get whole rooms into hysterics, but the person sitting beside him has a hard time containing a chuckle.
Chivalrous: Chivalry is certainly alive in Tom. He's the kind of man who opens doors to say "Ladies first." He does all the little things most women dream about, without a second thought. He's always polite, even coldly so, if he dislikes a person. The only time his manners are MIA are when he's drinking, or out of patience. He's kind despite his closed-off exterior, and is compassionate beneath his reserved facade. When he loves, it's with every fiber in his being -- and when he hates, well, vice versa.
Melancholy: Tom is prone to dark humor and depressing thoughts. He has a cynical stand point after everything that's happened to him. Sometimes, he misses Ireland. Other times, he thinks of his ex fiance -- who tore off as quickly as she could after seeing him bedridden in the hospital. The more he learned about her after she left him, the more happier he was she was out of his life; but he still feels resentment. He has a hard time with forgiveness, especially toward himself.
HOMETOWN. Dublin, Ireland. Thomas was born in a small Irish town, and learned carpentry from his father as a teenager. He had a happy childhood -- a younger sister, and an older brother. His parents loved each other, and they all worked hard on the family's modest farm. They moved to Dublin when he turned seventeen, and everything changed. Introduced to a whole new urban world, his little sister (Constance) let the city get to her head after meeting a boy. She became involved with drugs, and eventually became a part of the city's massive heroine problem. She ran off, and was found dead just after her fifteenth birthday. The young man she ran off with was never found. Tom and Constance had been very close, so naturally, he had tried desperately to get her away from the disaster he saw coming. After Connie's death, Tom's mother sank into a deep depression. From there, the relationship between his mother and father soured. Tom came home one evening to discover she'd committed suicide, and ended up having a falling out with his own father. He moved out not long after, and decided to come to America. He wanted a fresh start, but his ghosts followed him across the Atlantic. He still keeps in contact with his older brother; trying to persuade him to come to the United States, but Sean is adamant in looking after the father Tom disowned.
