The start of a new term always brought on many emotions for Piper. On the one hand, she was borderline depressed that she had to come back. At least she spent most of her time with her siblings when she was at home. With them she wasn’t quite so melancholy and cynical. Probably because she knew that they had to love her, despite everything else, due to their blood relation. She dreaded walking back into the castle where she would be surrounded by strangers and acquaintances, all people that she didn’t know and that didn’t know her. They would all be so thrilled to return. For the first two weeks she’d witness an overabundance of practical jokes and pranks. Piper would merely slink into a corner where no one would discover her and immerse herself in a book and her schoolwork. It was the way she passed the time.
On the other hand, Piper was thrilled to return to Hogwarts. It meant new material to learn, more room for opportunity and progress in terms of her education and schooling. If there was one thing that Piper truly valued, it was her education. With the hopes of becoming a healer in mind, Piper knew that she must be incredibly dedicated to her marks and schoolwork. Thus far, she had done an excellent job with her work, and she had to be near the top of her class. She was a bright young woman, and she knew that her future was going to be a good one.
Although the term had just started, Piper was anxious for her professors to start assigning more work. They had kept the coursework relatively light for the first week, and Piper had been able to go through and rapidly finish most of her assignments in one sitting. It was annoying to her, because she spent most of her time at the castle working on her schoolwork. Instead, she had wandered aimlessly to the library, a location she often wound up, and chose a few books that were extracurricular to read so that she would have something to pass the time.
Dinner was always an awkward affair for her. Although she did have several fellow Slytherin acquaintances, none of them were “real” friends. Some of the girls had caught her in the common room and insisted that she come down to dinner with them. Ready to tell a white lie, Piper’s stomach had betrayed her, growling loudly. They had smiled and grabbed her by the arm, yanking her the entire way down to the Great Hall where she would be sharing a meal with almost the entire castle.
Barely getting through the meal, Piper took small and delicate bites. Yes, she had been hungry, but she wasn’t much of a public eater. She disliked doing just about anything in front of large groups of people, which included eating her meals. Dazing off, she hadn’t realized that one of the girls sitting beside her was talking to her. “Earth to Piper.” Snapping out of it, she shook her head lightly, blonde curls swaying gently. Turning towards them, she plastered on a simple smile.
They were all looking at her and smiling from ear to ear, as if she was some kind of prize to be won. “So, we hear you’re dating a guy from University.” They giggled and squealed. Hesitating, Piper wasn’t sure what angle she wanted to go. Indulge their little fantasies, or deny it. Keeping the same, fake smile on her lips, she spoke softly. “He’s twenty-one and incredibly handsome. Last I heard, he was even in the running to be the next Minister of Magic.” Smiling wider, she quickly stood up from her half-finished plate and turned, exiting the Great Hall as quickly as they had been able to drag her in. She wasn’t even sure if they would realize her sarcasm or how they would interpret such. However, she also didn’t care.
She walked right to the doors of the castle and moved out into the setting sunlight which cast a dark orangey hue over the entire grounds. She wandered across the lawn, heading towards the Black Lake where she was bound to find some nook or cranny she could settle herself in until night fell. All she wanted was some privacy and peace. Standing for a moment before the lake, she looked down at her reflection, pausing only a moment to wonder how she had become who she was. Deciding she didn’t want to think about, not now, she moved to sit against a large tree. Pulling her legs up to her chest, she rummaged through her bag to find one of her novels. Opening it up, she allowed herself to slip into another world and reality, away from the questions and whispers of the world she was currently living in.
