This was going to be easy. Maybe. Emphasis on the maybe, because this was Brent and he never did seem to hold down one job for long. He liked to simply blame Lady Luck for that but, deep down, he knew that the truth was he could never show up on time or try to pretend he was insanely happy and energetic like his co-workers - he just couldn't stand it. At least with working at the music store he got to chill out a lot more and not be annoyingly perky. Besides, this place wasn't exactly bustling with people. There was only one or two customers browsing around right at this moment and the young man definitely wasn't thinking about seeing if they needed a hand; partly due to how irritated he got when some sod came up to him and asked whether or not he was in need of any assistance when it was one-hundred percent clear that he was capable of sorting himself out.
Since there was nobody else around that had the power to shout at him for changing the music that was currently playing, Brent took the opportunity to change it. After fiddling around for a few minutes, he let slip a rare grin when he could hear Biffy Clyro blasting out. Kind-of-not-really slacking off, the fellow sat on the edge of the counter and sang along under his breath in what could only be described as an appalling fake Scottish accent.Outfit - - - Clicky! Brent stopped singing, even if he had only been doing so very quietly before, when another guy entered the shop and looked as if he was heading over to him. Honestly, Brent knew that his Scottish accent wasn't too convincing, to put it lightly, and nobody else was allowed to hear it as a consequence. There was something vaguely recognisable about the dark-haired guy that had approached him and that distracted Brent from how he was supposed to act like a moody teenager and roll his eyes as he nodded in reply.
It was his eyes that Brent could've sworn he'd seen somewhere before. How could anyone forget them though? They were a striking shade of blue - a nice sort of striking, a pretty one. "Well, obviously." Brent did end up rolling his eyes in the end, but he was talking, give the man a break. Curiosity had gotten the better of him. The fellow held out his hand to the new guy. "Then, welcome, I guess. I'm Brent McKinney." This counted as being polite, didn't it? That meant he didn't have to smile too because introducing yourself was good enough for him.Outfit - - - Clicky! He saw the change in the new guy's expression once he'd introduced himself. Okay. So maybe he recognised Brent too? He was just going to assume that now because he had no other idea as to what was running through the other man's head. It took a few moments for it to register what he'd been told. But when Brent finally realised who exactly this was, his eyes widened slightly in surprise. God, it was Chase. Chase that he grew up with. Chase that he'd made so miserable. Chase who he'd used to bully to disguise the fact that perhaps he liked him a little too much, deep down.
Well, shit.
Brent wanted to apologise for how horrible he used to be but, really, he felt too uncomfortable with doing so. That left him with one option: carry on with his unpleasant behaviour. It was stupid and immature but it was better than letting himself be civil because maybe a tiny part of him still had a bit of a thing for the victim of his bullying. And that couldn't be allowed. A smirk toyed on his lips subconsciously. "Well, someone grew up to be big and strong. Just like daddy, eh?" Brent's words would, at first, seem relatively harmless but the malicious intent behind them was evident in his voice as well as his face. He knew Chase hadn't gotten on with his father, he couldn't help but bring that up again to see what kind of a reaction he could get. Not only that, but he'd clearly confirmed that he remembered who the guy was.Outfit - - - Clicky! Notes - - - *flails around* Tagged - - - Chayyy~ Lyrics - - - Up In The Air by 30STM

Chase wanted to go crawl in a hole and die there right now because he had already accepted this job, he needed it, yet he was supposed to work with Brent? This wasn't going to turn out well for him. Chase's eyes got wide at the words his former, and from the looks of it current, bully said to him. Of course it wasn't uncommon knowledge that Chase and his father fought. Well... more like Chase's father yelled and Chase tried not to make it so bad. Chase let his father beat him, just like he had let Brent tease and make fun of him. Chase had been, and probably still was, too weak to do anything about it.
"C-Can't you just stop? You bullied me years ago... why c-can't you just g-give up now?" Chase tried to be brave and tell Brent, but he was pretty sure his voice cracked at some point in those sentences. That's how fucking awesome he was. He looked pleadingly at Brent. "You're right. I've grown up. So have you. So let's just move past it and act friendly during work." Chase muttered, hoping that Brent would accept but half expecting Brent to laugh in his face. It was wrong to find Chase's stuttering kind of cute. Whatever, he wasn't going to dwell on it - he couldn't allow himself to do that. Brent felt bad for how he was acting and for his past behaviour towards Chase as well. He couldn't stop it. In his mind, it was impossible for things to be that easy. So, he got to his feet in order to appear bigger than before even if he was still shorter than Chase. His smirk grew, despite that fact. "There's no fun in givin' up."
He took a few steps towards his co-worker, invading his personal space for no good reason other than he was aiming to 'intimidate' Chase. Brent hadn't lost his touch, he was still totally good at the whole bullying thing. "I am being friendly, Chase. Can't you tell?" The smirk was quickly replaced with an innocent smile as Brent reached up to straighten his old victim's tie. He should probably stop - but he hadn't been lying at all, this actually was fun in his opinion.Outfit - - - Clicky! Being his own definition of 'friendly' entailed Brent not acting so much as insulting, but just as irritating as possible with the intention of making Chase feel extremely uncomfortable. There was no motive behind this either, other than him apparently not being able to act civilly towards the elder chap because reasons. It was a good enough argument to keep himself satisfied with his somewhat shady decision.
Acting like some sort of creep was doing the trick, Brent could see. He thought that keeping it up would be the best move he could make at the moment. "Sorry." Brent withdrew his hand, not sounding apologetic in the slightest. "Couldn't help myself." he added, passing it off as an obvious lie when it was more than partly truthful. Brent stuck with the same innocent expression, forcing back an amused grin as he batted his lashes. The more sensible corner of his mind was telling him to lay off because this was ridiculous but it was getting to the point where he couldn't help himself at all now.Outfit - - - Clicky! When Chase took a few steps away from him, Brent fought the urge to follow after him. He did have a limit to how creepy he was going to be, it wasn't like this was something he did everyday in the first place though. Sighing for no particular reason, Brent almost seemed to back off a bit by sitting back down on the edge of the counter. Now he didn't really know what to say or do, although the idea of poking fun at Chase's stutter was a tempting one - that wouldn't be friendly.
He pretended to look unimpressed, raising a brow and shrugging. "Shouldn't you know that already?" The answer was basically to go around looking busy (something that he didn't even attempt a lot of the time) but Brent thought that Chase was clever enough to have worked that out on his own.Outfit - - - Clicky! Truth be told, Brent wasn't entirely sure how he'd ended up here exactly. He'd gotten tired of seeing the same old faces and views in Wyoming - not to mention his general dislike for the place too. It wasn't a 'Brent-like' sort of area; not enough went on to keep him entertained. He supposed that was partly why he'd succeeded in stirring up some drama of his own by playing the role of the local bully with an undeniable eagerness. Brent knew now that there could've been other ways to bring a little more excitement to his life but it didn't matter any more since it wasn't something that he could go back and change. And, to this day, it was clear to see that old habits died hard.
He struggled with how to word his answer, forgetting for a few moments that he wasn't supposed to be having an average conversation but it had been a while since he'd managed to properly stop and have a chat with somebody else so Brent guessed that he was allowed. Brent was unable to explain why he was in New York of all places. Perhaps it was because it was so different from where he'd grown up and change had been what he originally was after. That made sense, he thought. The change had been a good one, despite it leaving him feeling a lot more detached from everyone than he had ever been before. He wasn't the type of guy who could just randomly start up conversations and make friends and end up forming some sort of active social life. Things never worked that way for Brent. Maybe he'd been hoping to meet new people here too but, so far, he hadn't succeeded. That was his own fault.
"Fancied a change. So here I am." He opted to share the greatly simplified version with Chase. "And you? You can't have just been following me... right?" Brent teased, the smirk returning to his lips.Outfit - - - Clicky! Notes - - - the ills killed my english ;-; Tagged - - - Chayyy~ Lyrics - - - Up In The Air by 30STM

A change. Chase wanted that too. Well. He needed the change. He couldn't stay in his fathers house anymore. He couldn't stand the fact that his father killed his mother, the only person that had ever shown him any affection. Growing up, he didn't have anyone that would read to him or sing to him. His father made sure that never happened. He made sure Chase's life was living hell and would do anything to make sure of it. His mother would do things behind his fathers back. Things that she wouldn't have been able to do if his father had known.
When Chase was ten years old, he was given his first drum set. He didn't know why his mother had given it to him at first. It was one of those things that he didn't even know he was getting and didn't know what to do with it at first. He couldn't play the drums when his dad was home, so he had to wait until his dad was out of the house for him to be able to play and practice. He started off listening to his favorite songs. Just listening and breaking down the drumming parts before he started to play them on his own drum set. Soon he knew all his favorite songs and more. He became good. Or so his mom told him. He would play as much as he could and it kept his mind off the beatings his father gave him. It gave him the escape he needed.
As to why he decided here of all places? Chase wasn't entirely sure. He knew he wanted a big town. If he moved to a big down, there was a better chance of him just blending in and not being known. If you lived in a small town like Upton, Wyoming, there was a good chance a lot of people ended up knowing you. Chase didn't like people knowing him because then people would be more tempted to come and talk to him and he just didn't fucking like talking to people. It was as simple as that. If he had a choice between staying inside or talking to someone, he would choose staying inside any day. He would rather kill himself than go to a party or something that involved social activity.
Chase couldn't stay in his small town anymore. The memories would have been too much, and he didn't know what he was going to do. He'd been in Manhattan for a good 8 years now. he left his house when he was 18. That was when his father killed his mother because he didn't have anything else to throw at her but a really sharp knife. Chase tried to save her, but couldn't. He was shaking and when he had tried to call the cops, his dad had threatened to do the same thing to him. Instead, he ran to his rooms, cut up his arms a bit like he normally did, and ran away from home. He had some money from a few different summer jobs saved up, used that to get a train to New York, and has been living off that, and a few spare jobs, since. This was his first big job he had gotten.
"I just... needed a change. This is where I ended up, I guess." Chase muttered. That was all Brent got. That would be all anyone would get. Chase wore long sleeves to block the scars. Blamed social anxiety as to why he stuttered. And gave vague answers to anyone else that wanted to know anything about him. It was his defense. Outfit ✦ ✦ ✦ Clicky! He found it funny how they'd both given the same answer - it was a big coincidence. Two guys from the same small town ending up in the same big city for similar reasons. Brent had partly worked out that Chase's father had to have something to do with the other man's departure too. From what he'd seen and heard, they hadn't gotten on well at all but Brent still hadn't known that much about their relationship. It had been worse than the issues between himself and his parents though, that much had been made clear.
"And, just your luck, fate's brought us together again." He'd gotten bored of the normal, not remotely creepy section of their conversation. Brent kicked his heels against the counter, his skinny legs swinging back and forth while he kept sat down. His gaze stayed focused on Chase, accidentally on purpose. Brent knew that if he looked away he'd end up uncomfortably glancing around the room. That wasn't allowed. He couldn't end up feeling too awkward here, that was Chase's job.
Changing tactics had been a good idea. This was easier that the insults and taunts, however it wasn't any more mature than his previous ways. His temper had been far more prone to flaring when Brent was younger and being angry took effort that he wasn't always in the mood for dealing with. Nowadays, while his fiery-temper remained, it wasn't as problematic due to his lack of emotional investment.Outfit - - - Clicky!
