A strand of her long, bright red hair was twirling around her finger as she stared at the blank screen of Microsoft word on her personal laptop. She was beginning to grow increasingly frustrated with this writing assignment; four pages, double spaced and a works cited - kill her now. What did she care about how America fell into the Great Depression anyway? History by far was her least favorite subject. It was hard enough just to pay attention during the class. Nothing against the teacher or anything like that, but the subject was just boring and didn't really capture her interest. Most of the time, she found herself doodling odd little drawings in her notebook until the bell rang. It was still a wonder to her as to how she was doing so well when she rarely copied down any notes. If only this paper would write itself. That would solve everything. Sarah had been sitting at her desk since this morning and all she had typed was her name, the date and class block. It was due next week so she still had a few more days to brainstorm, but she was hoping to just get it out the way and be done with it. No doubt, she'd be writing it up the night before the deadline. She always seemed to get the best inspiration when under pressure.
Letting out an exasperated sigh, she closed her computer and set it aside, deciding to leave the essay alone for a few more days. It was about time she get out of here for a couple of hours before she started climbing up the walls due to boredom. Some fresh air would do some good. She snatched up her satchel, figuring a nice lunch while sketching up random drawings would help clear her head a little bit. Wandering around downtown wasn't something she did all that often. In fact, she never even stepped foot beyond the school grounds during her freshman year here at the academy. It was only just recently that she decided to do some exploring downtown and it was only because she had been in need of new art supplies. This time she was going just for the hell of it. Besides, it was about time that she started crawling out of her shell. Her shyness was one aspect of her personality that was hard for her to overcome. Sarah was extremely introverted and was rather jealous of those who were able to make friends so easily. She had quite a few acquaintances, but there wasn't anyone she could even think of that would be considered a friend - at least, not yet.
The streets of the city were still slightly foreign to her as she weaved her way through the crowds. She didn't exactly have the best sense of direction in the world. Luck had been on her side during the previous visit when she found a group of people she recognized from school and followed them back to the academy. Not one of her proudest moments. This time, she was making it a point to pay more attention to her surroundings so she wouldn't get lost. She spotted a nice cafe up across the street and quickly looked both ways before crossing the pavement, nearly getting run over by an inattentive driver. The horn blasted and she offered a sheepish wave as she backpedaled onto the sidewalk where she brushed against someone. "Oh," she turned around, "Excuse me, I'm so sorry." Sarah offered a small smile to they guy, his features barely registering as she sidestepped him and continued onto her destination. The place was pretty big, but still had that homey atmosphere that guaranteed she'd be here again soon. There weren't too many customers, it seemed she missed the afternoon rush for lunch. She grabbed a menu and took it with her to a small booth by the window to look over.
