Mackenzie had just finished teaching her little hip hop babies at the dance school and she had nothing else planned for the day. She was supposed to sub a class in the city, but she had just received a call saying the class wasn’t full enough so they were going to cancel it. She was a little bummed, but at the same time it meant a whole day to do whatever she wanted. Of course, her day was planned out around her classes, so now she felt a little thrown off. She decided she would head over to Avalon’s apartment and see if she wanted to do something today.
Before she headed over to the apartment, she had to change. She was only a few minutes from her house so it wouldn’t really be a hassle to do so. She couldn’t walk around the city in her gross dance clothes. Sure, she didn’t really have any plans to go anywhere fancy, but you never knew what would happen with the two girls. It was best to be dressed for any occasion. After showering and picking out a cute outfit she grabbed her purse and headed out the door.
Pulling out her phone to check messages, Mackenzie considered texting Avalon before showing up. She decided the surprise would be more fun. Even if Avalon were working right now, she usually got off pretty early. She wouldn’t have to wait too long.
After the short trip to lower Manhattan, Mackenzie rang the apartment’s doorbell. She waited a few minutes and rang it again, incase her friend was in the shower and didn’t hear it the first time. After no response again, she pulled out her key and let herself in. The two girls had keys to each other’s places so they could come and go as they please. She entered the apartment and called out, ”Hello? Anyone home?” No response met her. Not even from Preston, Avalon’s older brother. Mackenzie sighed and flopped down on the couch. She figured she would just wait a bit for her friend to get home. If she wasn’t home in half an hour, she would head to midtown to see if she could find her.

Finally, the kid managed a day off. This was no ordinary day off because this just so happened to be one of those days all college students dreamed of having. A day filled with absolutely, positively nothing to do. The bookstore had no use for him today, he had no college classes today, and his homework was completely done. His day was completely free which only meant one thing for Preston Knight considering he had no friends to hang out with for the day. His sisters were both out at work, and majority of his friends were back in Staten, not that the kid every really had that many friends to begin with. In all honesty, he had a very small close-knit of friends...like two. The rest were mainly through his sisters...it was totally ok for the kid considering he wasn't the most social person in the world. He was okay with having a few friends rather than a big group of friends...it was just the way the guy had always been.
Fact of the matter for him was that he planned on today being one of those lazy days. You know the kind where you sleep in for as long as your body will let you. Then when you finally drag your lazy bum out of your bed you watch a little bit of TV, eat and then finally...finally you get around and get into the shower to make sure you don't stink too awful. And now. Well, here Preston was in the shower getting himself cleaned up for the day to basically do a bunch of nothingless. And, would the kid feel sorry about this later? Nope, absolutely not...he was completely and totally looking forward to a day filled with nothing to do. After the shower, he planned on relaxing on the couch, turning on the television and maybe reading a comic book or two. Ah, the life of an unsociable, nerd...pure bliss for him. Pure torture for some people that were much more outgoing then him.
Except things did not go according to plan. Climbing himself out of the shower, he wrapped a towel around his torso, whistling as he walked himself into his living room as a hand ran through his thick curly hair for the kid seemed to have left his glasses on the table. Walking into the living room was when the whistling stopped and he stopped dead in his tracks. A tiny, girlish yelp escaped his lips as his towel nearly fell off his torso but his hand reached up and gripped his towel before anything unwanted would have been shown. His face immediately turned a bright shade of red as the embarrassment sunk into his body, and he stammered out a...
"Kenzie!?" his glasses were missing so his eyes were squinting as if he didn't actually believe what his eyes were seeing, "W-What are you doing here!?" stuttering over the words, he backed himself into a wall...knowing just how stupid the question was. I mean come on! She was his sister's best friend after all...

Waiting was not easy for Mackenzie. She was so used to being busy that downtime with nothing to do really got to her. She had been waiting for Avalon for almost ten minutes and she was already getting antsy. She began to wish she had texted her friend first before coming over. She could’ve found something to do at home instead of sitting in an empty apartment by herself. To kill time, she decided to play a game on her phone. She had been addicted to Candy Crush Saga for a while now, but never really had the time to play. Today was the perfect opportunity for her while she waited.
Mackenzie opened the app up on her phone and started playing. The game really was addicting, and when she played she tended to forget about the world around her. It took hearing her name called to force her back to reality. When she realized she wasn’t alone, she let out a little yell of surprise. ”Preston?!” She had no idea he was in the apartment with her the whole time. He must not have heard the doorbell or her call out when she entered. She took a good look at him and realized he was only in a towel. She turned bright red and averted her eyes. No wonder he didn’t hear her. He had been in the shower the whole time.
”Oh gosh, oh, um, I wanted to surprise Avalon since my afternoon plans got cancelled. I didn’t think anyone was home. Oh lord, I’m sorry. I should’ve just texted her and waited instead of coming over here.” She continued to babble on nervously and stopped short when she realized he was still in a towel and probably wanted to get dressed. ”I’m so sorry. Um, do you want me to leave or something so you can get changed? I really didn’t mean to startle you like this..ahh..” She couldn’t force herself to look up. She knew her face was as red as her hair and she hoped the lighting was dim enough for him to not notice. She knew she couldn’t explain why she was so embarrassed. No one knew that she had a bit of a crush on her best friend’s brother..

The boy was clearly baffled. This had taken him by complete surprise to see the red headed beauty sitting on his couch. Let's be real...it shouldn't have. The girl he had been crushing on since the moment he laid his eyes on her was after all his best friend's sister for crying aloud. It was only normal for her to be at his home waiting for Avalon. Actually the girl nearly always showed up even sometimes he'd walk home from a long days of work and there she would be. He should have known better but it really had been the last thing on his mind. It was after all also his home and he didn't expect Avalon home for at least another hour or two. That song Bruno Mars was going to be his theme song of the day. today i'm not doing anything.... a theme song Preston would love to claim his own on any day off he had.
Ok...when it came to Kenzie things were a little different. Whenever his sister asked him to hang out with her and Micah he jumped at the chance. It was clear to most that the boy had a major thing for the girl. He never really acted upon it because he always found himself so clammy, and red faced when the girl was around. He'd swell up, stammer over his words, and gawk at her like a little child. Those undenying butterflies always swooned around in his stomach and he assumed the girl just thought he was incredibly geeky, and socially awkward. Geeky yes but the boy was also a people person on most days when allotted. But being the geek he was he wasn't capable of making so many friends because his conversation topics usually deferred from what other's rather be speaking about. Yet, when he found someone to talk about anime, spiderman, comics, books, harry potter and many other assorted 'geeky' topics he was in high heaven. He was a book and movie fanatic and that always seemed to be his preferred communication.
You'd think Preston would be entirely used to seeing Kenzie all the time. She was over enough and if they were being honest because of his sister, they were sort of friends. Sure he didn't talk really fast with her or have lengthy conversations but they had pictures together, they talked and hung out together with Avalon around, and sometimes...he let a little lose around her and goofed around with her. It was most often with his sister next to him or in the next room but he still shouldn't be finding himself so...awkward with her. She'd been in his life for years now... but come on now! If your crush was sitting on the couch looking at you...and you're standing there in front of her with a towel as your only clothing it was only natural you'd be a little shaken up!
Preston Knight was so far from being a cool guy. It was only natural he'd react in such a alarmed fashion around her at this predicament he found himself in.
"You dont have to leave!" he felt like he shouted this statement at her. There could be no way possible that his face would ever get anymore red then it was now. "I... I... uh..." stammering over his words "I'll just go change..." pausing briefly, "You stay." making a hand notation as if he were talking to a dog he mentally slapped himself in the head. "I mean you can stay if you want..." turning he rammed himself right into the wall and let out a girlish squeak. "Ow..." he muttered lightly under his breath before quickly heading into his bedroom and shouting through the door.
"Im just going to change!"

Still unable to look up at Preston, Mackenzie kept her eyes focused on the ground. She laughed a little at the situation and nodded when he told her she could stay. ”Yeah, uh sure, I’ll um, just wait right here while you go um, change.” She waited until he left the room, cringing slightly when he walked into the wall. When she heard his door shut, she took a deep breath. She wasn’t sure why she felt so awkward being around Preston. Sure, maybe it was the fact that he was in a towel, but she had seen him a towel before. The four of them had spent plenty of time in her parent’s beach house in the Hamptons over the years and had definitely seen each other at their best and worst. So why was today so much different?
She had met Preston for the first time a few weeks after meeting his sister Avalon. Their meeting took place the first time Mackenzie slept over. Sure it was awkward, but after that day they became good friends and hung out all over the city together. Ok, usually they only hung out together if Avalon or Micah were around, so maybe that’s why things seemed a bit weird today. That and the fact that lately Mackenzie had been crushing on Preston a bit. She wasn’t sure what it was about him that she liked so much, but she had been finding herself hoping she would see him everytime she hung out with Avalon. She didn’t expect anything to ever come of it. He probably just looked at her like another sister. But one could always dream..
While she waited for him to finish changing she wandered into the kitchen to grab something to drink. She pulled a bottle of water out of the fridge and sat back down on the couch. She glanced around looking for her phone but it seemed to be missing. It must have landed somewhere when Preston entered the room and she jumped up. She got down on her hands and knees to look under the couch. ”Hey, Preston. Do you happen to know when Avalon is coming home?” She yelled in the direction of his room. She noticed her phone pretty far under the couch and sighed. She wiggled halfway under praying her skirt didn’t ride up too far in case Preston came back out.

Finally managing to catch his breath he leaned against his bedroom taking deep and steady breaths. He knew for one hundred and one percent certain his face would still be that deep crimson red. Why did this stuff happen to him!? The boy was already one of the most geekiest kids to walk the planet and then something like that happens to him. Oh goodness, was god punishing him for something!? This had to be one of the curliest punishments ever to walk out pretty much naked and see the girl he'd been crushing on since he pretty much started liking girls. Or not really. I mean honestly...it wasn't as if Kenzie hadn't seen him in swimming trunks and such. They went to the beach together with her brother, and his sister and she had seen his ghostly white skin, and his super skinny, bony self so why had this bothered him so much? Maybe it was just the concept of the whole idea...I mean he just took a shower, at any given moment that towel could have fell off, and it didn't help that he had been partially blind.
"Oh god," he breathed out, lightly banging his head on his door. Not only did she just see him in his towel she also saw him make a complete fool of himself as he ran into the wall. Was it not so obvious that he had a thing for her? Oh god, he hoped not... Scrimmaging around in his closest he finally pulled out a Pokemon T-shirt and threw that over his head, and stumbled his way into some shorts and placed his glasses on his head. Well! At least he could finally see again. That was a plus. His head averted to the door again and he looked extremely lost inside his head for a few moments. He wasn't sure if he even wanted to go face her now. That whole situation was just so awkward. He was pretty certain he commanded her to stay though. What had he been thinking there!? He should have been like 'yeah! leave!' then he wouldn't have to face her. Yet, he was pretty certain that he coudn't avoid her forever. She was after all his sister's best friend.
And, oh god! His sister...he was sure when Avalon found out what happened he would never hear the end of it! Oh how torturous this whole thing seemed to end up being for him. Finally, with one slow and steady breath he took a deep breath and walked out of the door to go face the music. "I-I'm sorry about that..." he breathed out as he managed his way into the living room once again. This time thankful he was fully clothed and able to see her completely now, his vision fully intact. When he caught sight of Kenzie his face turned a shade of red again and he instantly hated himself for that as he cleared his throat a bit.
"Uh..." pausing his voice caught in his throat he finally stammered out a, "She...She's going to be a bit late. Someone called in sick..."
