When it came to work for Alexis she tended to use a cab as her source of transportation, or the subways depending on the destination and how much she felt like hoofing it. Doing what she did, in such a competitive environment, could be stressful from time to time, as any profession could, she imagined. Wanting something as bad as she did though made the blow slightly deeper finding out that your main competitor, in house, was constantly scooping you for the big, career making, stories because she was sleeping her way to the top. Alexis had been raised on pretty definite morals, her parents had been missionaries for goodness sake so that alone should have spoke volumes on the types of values that Lexi held. It was more than that though. It was about self-respect and earning her way through talent and hard work versus getting a leg up because you were spreading your legs.
The knowledge had left her in a bit of a conundrum as to what to do with it. Did she take the issue up with human resources as fraternization was frowned upon, especially if it was being used as a method of advancement? They had those sorts of rules in place because they didn’t want a scorned lover filing any lawsuits. It had happened before and the sensitivity training, apparently, wasn’t being put into practice between the couple. She was upset over the fact that she was getting stepped on because she wasn’t willing to compromise her integrity like this other woman. On the other hand, if she did decide to take it up through the proper channels there was no guarantee that one, anything would be done about it besides her getting the reputation for being a tattletale and two, there wouldn’t be any blowback from a disgruntled boss having to deal with the red tape of dismissing Alexis’ claims.
She had been down in Tribeca for an interview that, once she got there she had found the very woman that was causing her so much internal struggle, already there and yet again sweeping a story right from under her feet. Maybe it wasn’t the most responsible thing to do, or the best way to deal with her troubled mind, but as she was walking down the street, Alexis slipped into a bar. She was of legal drinking age; there was no harm in having one or two to help settle her nerves. However, sitting on that bar stool, she had barely finished half a glass of wine before something else troubling decided to grace her presence. It was fairly late but just creeping around ten o’clock at night and yet the trio of men in the corner of the bar had probably been there steadily drinking since five. They were drunk, she could smell the stench of beer coming off the one that slipped up on the seat next to her making her stomach churn slightly at the saturation of it. By that point it had seeped into his pores and he was sweating the smell.
Alexis smiled politely at the bartender paying for her drink and giving him a decent tip while the drunken man slurred, what he probably imagined to be, charming words to capture her attention. Instead she wanted no part of him and as a result Lexi was gathering up her purse and excused herself from the man’s company. As she was heading out something must have clicked with the drunkard because he was following her out despite the dismissals of his two buddies who were claiming she wasn’t worth it. The air was fairly cool when she stepped outside making her wish, briefly, she’d brought a jacket with her. That thought was quickly overtaken by the rough hand that grasped her bicep. ”Think you’re too good for me, huh? The man gave her a little yank into him, which Alexis flinched at. ”Please, I don’t want any trouble.” She was a pacifist and had no self-defense training but she wasn’t completely weak and she managed to squirm out of his grasp. Taking a step away he was right back on her, this time grabbing her by the shoulders with both hands. Alexis was frightened and her mind frantically searched for an escape from the situation and yet was frozen at the same time in anticipation for his next move.
