It was just another night at the bar, this little, sort of out of the way place in lower Manhattan; Tribeca to be more specific. It wasn’t exactly the life Athan had dreamed he would be living, but it wasn’t a life he hated either. It dragged sometimes, but overall, it was a lot better than being stuck at some desk job he’d be miserable at for the rest of his life. Bad nights come and go just like bad times, it was nothing to work himself up over for too long. Tonight happened to be one of those so and so nights, not a whole lot of business but it wasn’t completely dead either. He was kept busy at the right moments and when things died down he was able to take a break and swing back a few drinks. Technically he wasn’t supposed to be drinking on the job, but it would take a lot more than one bottle of beer to get him drunk. He kept a clean record which was the important part. The bar was really more of an eye sore in and of itself, but it had a comfy sort of feel to it. It wasn’t the hectic, electronic crazed bars with the strobing lights and the too loud music, too many bodies pressed up close together. Granted, those bars were a good get away if you wanted to drown your thoughts out. This sort of his home away from home, it was his environment and he felt very comfortable and confident in it.
Athan was doing his usual thing, chatting up the customers and further instilling that feel of comfiness in the atmosphere of the bar. There was a low humming from the various people scattered around the place. Some were clustered in the corners, others conjoined near the small stage towards the back of the building were an acoustic section was being held. Every now and then the sound of raucous laughter would sound from one of the tables and then die down again. Every time a smile would spread across his lips and he’d finish off whatever beverage he was making, winking at the customer before handing off their drink. He’d flirt non stop with the customers in a way that wasn’t creepy, just amicable in nature. He was a musician, making people feel welcomed and apart of something was what he was good at. He wanted to make music that made people feel good and open and absolutely uninhibited in their actions. Through the way he treated people, he was trying to achieve the same effect. He wasn’t perfect, far from it, but he’s come to accept certain aspects of his flaws so he wasn’t obsessing over it like he was when he was in high school.
By now Athan was familiar with most of the people that came through this bar. The regulars who often came by for a drink and a chat before they went on their or spent a couple more hours knocking back drinks with friends. There were sometimes the asshole drunks who believed they could pick fights with anyone while intoxicated, usually the ill-informed frat boys who were in the city for the weekend causing trouble. Athan was capable of himself, having needed to fend off a few people in his lifetime while on the road touring, so even if they had bouncers, Athan was there to help when needed. Athan was chatting up yet another customer - who seemed far too infatuated with him - when another walked through the door. He didn’t bring his head up to see who it was, simply finishing off the drink he was working on and handing it off the the girl across with a wink and a smile, before turning his attention. “What will it be love?” He smiled as he noticed the new customer was a girl. His eyes never leaving her, evident mirth and a little mischief in his blue eyes.

After thinking long and hard about the situation that Alexis had found herself in, going over her options and weighing all the pros and cons she had finally decided on a solution- thinking that she was doing the right thing. Well if that hadn’t blown up in her face and put her into a hole that she knew would take even more work to get out of then she already had to do on a daily basis. It’d been two weeks since she had found out about a certain fraternization at work, a boss exploiting an employee and that employee exploiting the exploitation. They had been using sex to get laid and the other one to advance her career. It had made Alexis’ stomach churn and had her riddled with conflicting moralities that had finally boiled down to her action of taking it up with the couple. It had resulting in her being threatened to be fired if she didn’t keep her mouth shut and a mountain of extra work to be done, including running all sorts of errands for the superior like fetching his dry cleaning, getting him coffee and other menial tasks that someone else should have been doing.
To say the least, Lexi wasn’t in the brightest of spirits when she’d gotten off of work that day. She wanted somewhere off the beaten path where she would be able to lick her wounds and sulk at least for a little bit and drown in her sorrows. Okay, the latter wasn’t really a drowning with her being a light weight but well, she wanted to take that edge off and maybe get drunk enough- for her not the hardest thing to do- to sleep well that night. Hailing a cab she ventured out to Tribeca finding a quaint bar to do just that in. She was achy, all over, both from the exertion that she’d been put through but more so from how mentally exhausted she was. Turned out, in the real world, doing the right thing could have you paying dearly. Maybe she should have gone over their heads but now she was scared. Her superior had said that the bosses wouldn’t believe her, she’d be labeled a disgruntled employee or trouble maker and lose her job. With the turn of events, she believed them. Going to them first had been out of respect, hoping they’d make the right choice and end the affair but that wasn’t how it played out.
Taking a seat at the bar she was greeted with a friendly tone and a handsome smile. Alexis was never one to be rude and even in her mopey state, she offered a weak smile in return hoping that it wouldn’t come across condescending. ”Any chance you’ve got something back there that can help a person forget?” If he did, this bartender had clearly been a Godsend. The question did seem to put a slight bit of lightness in her tone again but nothing compared to how she normally was. Alexis didn’t like her first impression being a sad half experience of herself but when you were just in a mood, what were you to do but try your best? She looked to him with hope dancing behind her gaze. Surely there would be something of the alcoholic nature that would make her feel more bubbly and herself- over riding her current deflation. Who to know better what that would be than a bartender? Alexis was trusting him to get her something to suit.

Athan grinned, studying the woman with an even gaze before answering. “I may have a solution, how about you tell me a little about yourself while I get it ready? I’m Ace by the way.” He grinned again as he introduced himself. It was rare that he ever introduced himself as Athan except for legal instances such as dealing with management, lawyers, doctors, etc...Athan reached just below the top of the bar for a glass and a few other things, getting ready to concoct a beverage for the poor girl who looked as if she could use a pick me up. He wouldn’t be upfront with her about it, he highly doubted that was the last thing she wanted to hear and it wasn’t his job to do so anyway. “Is it your first time here or I just don’t pay attention?” He asked easily, laughing softly with a twinkle in his eye. He had a habit of remembering faces, never names so much, but faces stood out to him. Athan liked to believe he was a good bartender. He was sociable and relatively trustworthy in the sense that he wasn’t going to be a dick and slip something into a customer’s drink. He was very peculiar about it considering a lot of bad things tended to happen to people at bars.
“You came on a good night.” He eased into conversation casually. Pouring and shaking alcohol, ice, and mixer. It was a variant of long island iced tea with slightly more mixer than in the original recipe. “It’s not too busy which is a good thing because carrying out conversations on a busy night is hard and I like to get to know people.” Athan shrugged slightly, giving one last shake to the beverage he just mixed before pouring it into a glas and sticking a lemon wedge onto the rim of the glass before passing it over. He didn’t intend to leave and drop the conversation until the next customer, which didn’t seem like there would be one for some time.
Athan leaned onto the counter on his forearms, pulling his bottom lip between his teeth and rolling it before letting it go once again. He knew his brother would be out tonight somewhere in the city. He went out sometimes when he could, but it didn’t seem all that plausible lately with hectic schedules and dates that kept conflicting. With that being said, they hadn’t had a proper conversation in a couple of weeks now. Being this close to his little brother and not being able to see or talk to him made Athan feel uneasy. Anything could happen in a city this big and even though his little brother wasn’t a child anymore, Athan still had to be the big brother and protect him when he needed to.

Ace seemed to have this charm about him, a quality- or several- that would draw people to him. Alexis suspected that was necessary in his line of work and had to, in combination with being attractive, aid in getting him the tips he needed to make a decent living. Bartenders, in her opinion, had all the stuff necessary to make great conmen because they tended to put people at ease and were adaptable enough to converse with all types, that sort of chameleon trait came in handy with swindling people. While Lexi might have been recognizing those things, she wasn’t putting them against Ace and assuming the worst of him, merely observing a potential. She was sure that he was a good, upstanding young man just there to make some money and maybe indulge in entertaining conversation with someone new, there was the chance that the things she observed had never even been realized by him before.
”I’m Alexis.” If his hands hadn’t been busy starting to mix her up a drink, she would have proffered her hand to shake. She was in the business of remembering names and faces as well as the details that went along with them. In her mind there was always a story lurking behind each person but most of the time that story went untold. Even she had something noteworthy attached to her past. That had been kept relatively quiet by some grace of God. Maybe because the tragedy had been too raw for television or print at the time that it had happened, the media had been a bit more sensitive back in the nineties and maybe because it had happened in a different country that had contributed to its quieted nature. Whatever the case, Alexis was thankful she hadn’t ever been exposed and the only reminder, maybe something worse than immortalized in print, were the scars on her back, which she hid from the world- her own private torment.
Glancing around the place, it did seem slightly familiar to her. ”I think I came here once before, two years back.” It had been one of those nights where she and some girlfriends were out on the town, freshly twenty-one and ready to flash that new ID to the bartenders with a proud grin on her lips. She wasn’t sure what to tell him about her. Usually Alexis was the one asking the questions and getting all the answers so when the tables were turned it had her slightly off kilter. ”There isn’t much to say about me really.” Lie. Okay, no it was more a case of modesty, but then Alexis had always had that going for her. Talking about herself wasn’t her favorite subject, not because she was insecure of the person that she was but more so because she was so used to getting to know everyone that most of the time, she forgot to tell people about her. She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear thinking it over for a moment. ”I’m just some random woman trying to make it in the big city like thousand of others.” A shoulder lifted in a half shrug.
It was already late. Alexis hadn’t gotten out of the office until after midnight and she hadn’t made it to Tribeca through the heavy traffic until one o’clock. She usually wasn’t out this late, instead tucked away safely in her bed curled up to her bed sheets and out like a light. The nightlife wasn’t something that Alexis experienced in excess, there was the occasional night out with friends or her doing in field research for a story but just because- that was a rarity for her. ”I’m sure you’ve heard similar stories hundreds of times. I’m not quite as new to the city as some of them or struggling as hard to survive.” She gave him a small smile putting lips to glass and taking an experimental sip of the drink he’d made. It was delicious and she audibly made it known. ”Mmm…this is great.” And hopefully would do the job. ”I bet you get to meet all sorts of interesting people. Who was the most fascinating so far?” Just like that Alexis was back into her groove, turning the conversation onto him, compelling Ace with a conversation topic that would flow better at least on her end. Alexis just felt lost trying to find the words to describe her. She found herself nursing her drink, it was just so yummy.
