It was getting dark; twilight was upon the city, and tall skyscrapers in the distance began to glow. Theta smiled to herself, the concrete jungle was ever-changing and exciting, but she preferred the slightly more modest section of Chelsea. Chelsea was home. She always felt the warm tingle of nostalgia whenever she walked through the familiar streets. She'd known these streets like the back of her hand as a child, and that knowledge hadn't faded as she'd gotten older. But what she loved most about the area was it's close proximity to the Hudson.
She'd taken a cab past the water on her way here, just to admire the water -- if only for a short while. She was still buzzing with excitement. She had a new job, one she was positive she would be happy with, and she wanted to celebrate. And the only person who would appreciate what she had in mind was her older brother, Bradbury. Theta had brought with her the ingredients for a celebration; Chinese food and an old horror movie. It had been too long since they'd done something fun together, and Theta missed her big brother. Even if he was a pain, and refused to grow up; and the fact that she was usually stuck playing babysitter. Still, she supposed that was part of his charm, part of what made him an individual. Nevertheless, Theta loved her brother dearly.
She hadn't bothered to call ahead, she liked surprises, and she doubted Bradbury was busy. He wouldn't be masquerading around the college campus, and she'd stopped by his Starbucks earlier -- he hadn't been there. And if he was out taking pictures, well she didn't mind waiting. She had a key. For all the times Bradbury misplaced his own.
It had grown slightly darker as Theta walked down the street, but people still milled about. It had gotten a little chilly too, so she was glad she'd stopped home to change into an old sweatshirt and jeans. The trip wasn't far, either, and soon she stood at her brother's door. She arranged the bags in her hands to shimmy a hand free to knock on it, but went ahead and turned the handle to let herself in anyway. It was unlocked, and if Bradbury was allowed to pretend he was younger than he was, well, she was allowed some juvenile habits too -- wasn't she?
"Oh Bradbury!" she called, smiling to herself. She was too happy to mind that she'd burst in without an invitation. She doubted he would mind, though.

Bradbury had learned sometime ago that his sister could never be kept out, she would also force herself into his space and it only seemed logical to supply her with a key. Some days he regretted it, when he'd find her on his couch, ready to provide him company when all he wanted to do was sleep for the next eight hours uninterrupted. But, usually, he valued her company. Even if, like most little sister, she annoyed him now and again. As per usual, Bradbury was slouched on his small couch, eyes on the flickering television that played a documentary on the green river killer. His sick fasciation with murderers and death was, he thought, entirely his father's fault. Being the son of an embalmer, he found himself frequently in the company of death. Death lived on his father's skin, it paid their bills. It was everywhere, unavoidable, unknown and unexplored. Death came with various theories. Death left behind bodies to rot, and it left behind cadavers. Bradbury couldn't help but be fascinated, in turn, by people who brought death to others in such disgusting and horrible ways. He could barely understand it, and so naturally, he loved it. He was in the midst of preparing popcorn when his sister burst through his front door, painted a hunter green. He'd done it one night when he was considerable drunk and bored, he couldn't remember why he'd done it come morning but he thought it gave his little apartment character. "Theta," he said over his shoulder, stuffing popcorn in his mouth as he moved back to the living room. His apartment was incredibly small but it was cheap and suite him well enough. "There's this thing, it's a very wonderful thing, and it's called knocking."CODED BY ELECTRIC OF BTN

Theta beamed at her brother; it was hard not to notice his subtle, disgruntled annoyance, but it usually never bothered her. She only smiled knowingly at him, rolling her eyes towards the ceiling at his explanation for common social behavior. Please, like he was the one to be talking. "Why knock when I have this wonderful key?" she asked, arching a dark brow. Her gaze flicked to his living room, eyeing the TV, interest in her eyes. She enjoyed a good horror movie, but a lot of the real life things unnerved her. It reminded her of . . . but Theta shook off the thought, still in a bubbly, celebratory sort of mood. She plopped down on the floor, her back against the couch; she'd taken her liberty for the day, and she knew how much he loved to stretch out on the tiny thing.
"I brought something better," she said, nodding towards the TV with a youthful smile. "And I brought food." His popcorn smelled good, but it had been Chinese Theta had been craving. She absently stretched out her legs and plucked the disc from her collection of bags, showing it to him, "Want to watch it?"
Theta's random appearances were by no means uncommon. But she rarely had news. Turning, she flashed him one of her bright, excited smiles; she wasn't bothered if he was still impatient with her. They would always be like that. All siblings were; it was some strange part of childhood, it just came with you . . . no matter your age. "Guess what?" she couldn't reign it in any longer. She had to tell someone. She'd been dying to tell someone all day. Who better than her big brother? Even as engrossed with his television and popcorn as he was, he'd know how much this meant to her.

Bradbury cursed ever giving her a key in the first place but knew that if she held his extra one, that she'd never lose it and he'd always have a way to get back into his house when he frequently locked himself out. It was a bad habit he was trying to break. Most recently he'd had a third key made, stuck it under his welcome mat and used it to let him in. Unfortunately, he'd forgotten to put the extra key under the mat and he'd had to be saved by his doting baby sister. "You are a saint, an annoying house breaking saint, but a saint,"he replied as he repositioned himself on the couch and began to dig around in one of her bags, taking his pick of the Chinese food she'd brought over. Nodding at her once he'd grabbed one of the greasy boxes as a signal to pop the movie in. He had plans to get her her own chair sooner or later, or at least a special cushion but he never got around to it or other bills got in the way. For now, at least, he tossed a couch cushion on to the floor for her to supply something for her to sit on aside from the his tattered old rug. "What?"a smile creeping onto his own face at the sight of his sisters, knowing that something quite wonderful had to be the source of her evident joy. Whatever her news was, he had a feeling it would make his chest swell with proud for his successful and persistent sister. CODED BY ELECTRIC OF BTN

As much as Bradbury frustrated her, and vice versa, there was no one else in the world she loved as much as him. He'd always been there, with his easygoing attitude and eccentric habits. They were opposites, but at the same time had the same tastes for macabre horror and greasy food. It was him she'd came to to share her news first, because there was something about the pride that shined in his eyes that made her feel like all her efforts were truly worthwhile. And besides, her life would become utterly boring without her older brother. Who would she chase after if he wasn't around?
"You are a saint, an annoying house breaking saint, but a saint,"
Theta grinned; victory was in her eyes. She laughed and nudged the bags closer to him, knowing he was bound to eat the majority of it. "I know," she laughed as she hopped to her feet to pop the movie in. She absently began to grab all the things that Bradbury glossed over, glad he had left some of the chicken for her. She grabbed a fortune cookie too, and plopped down on the cushion he tossed her, making herself at home. It was sad, but she felt more at home in Bradbury's snug little place that she ever felt in her apartment. Maybe it was just because he was there, and oftentimes she felt her own place was much too quiet.
Crossing her legs and sliding open the chicken, she popped a piece in her mouth and eyed the blue screen of the TV as the movie loaded. She glanced at him, her smile widening at his excitement. She found these quiet evenings with fast food and bad horror to be some of her favorites; especially when she had good news for her big brother. "You're looking at Carrington-Bradford's newest employee," she mused, her eyes sparkling with glee. She was out of the old job she'd hated so much, and there was nothing sweeter than a fresh start. "This is celebratory Chinese," she laughed, beaming towards Bradbury -- happy she finally had someone to share her news with. Someone who actually cared.
