Bradbury was not exactly a creature of habit. He had his routines, like any human being but even those were never set in stone. The only thing in Bradbury’s life that was ever constant, aside from his daily or tri-daily meal of scrambled eggs, was his visits to Central park. They were the only part of his day that might be the slightest bit planned. When he decided to go Central Park, his whole day was victim to it. How could a photographer not spend hours there when there was so much to see? He loved roaming the paved pathways, clicking and snapping at anything that caught his eye.
Today was such a day. The sun was high in the mid-afternoon sky and the park was buzzing with life and Bradbury had ditched a two hour long lecture to drag his long limbs around the park. ”No...excuse me...I’m not...”the false young man muttered, attempting to snap a picture of a sweet old couple but the shot was being blocked by some middle-aged woman in a green trench coat barking at him for taking her picture without her permission. He let out a long breath of air, blowing his stubborn hair up over his forehead as he turned away from her. That’s one thing he disliked about being a photographer, getting yelled at for taking pictures.
It wasn’t uncommon for Bradbury to loose track of the time, being completely pulled into whatever it was he was doing but in Central Park he completely become disconnected from time all together. He wandered away from the complaining woman, her mutters lost to the wind. However long he weaved through the people, watching them through his camera, he wasn’t sure. The blur became clear again once again when he stopped in the middle of a pathway, eyes falling upon a blonde a little ways ahead of him. Minding her own business and looking quite captivating in the late afternoon sun, he brought the camera to his eye and snapped a flurry of pictures before approaching her.
“Hey,”he greeted, as if he’d known her for years. Bradbury talked to everyone that way. It didn’t matter if he knew someone or not, his voice was always filled with a friendly causality and his initial smile was always warm. He was quite like a dog that way. It didn’t matter who you were, just that you were a person capable of paying attention to him. “Sorry to bother you....but you have really nice cheekbones.”

WORDS WHISPERED THROUGH PRISON BARSThe day was perfect, perfect for anything. The sky was blue, the sun warm and bright -- and so, naturally, Alice found herself outside. Reading a new script. Of course, there were more exciting things to do, but even the beautiful day couldn't distract her from the words beneath her fingertips. She'd focused too much this semester on theater to not get a part. She was slacking in nearly every class . . . and her friends seemed to be dwindling quickly, now that she was reluctant to share any of her free time. Frustrating as that was, Alice was done with small roles. Her hard work had to pay off . . . one of these days.
It felt like she'd read over the same lines a dozen times, committing them to her already excellent memory. The lines weren't the problem; it was her determination to understand the character that was slowing her down. The college was putting on a performance of The Phantom of the Opera. And well, it would be a lie to say she didn't want the role of Christine. She wanted it bad. Paging through the parts for Act I, Allie sighed, flipped it shut and reclining against the bench -- closing her eyes and brushing her sun-warmed blonde hair from her face, relishing in the feeling of summer heat.
And quiet. It was so quiet in Central Park, and the calm was lovely. She sometimes felt claustrophobic in the city, surrounded by hustle and bustle, car horns and yelling businessmen . . . Chicago hadn't been much different, but she'd been born in the suburbs. And she needed to see a little green every once and a while. Really, she couldn't have picked a better day. The leaves of the trees shone like emeralds in the afternoon sun, and beneath them the grass looked cool and inviting. Alice slipped her sandal off and brushed her toes along it, smiling at the memory of summers spent at the lakehouse with her brothers. If only she could find that same, easy happiness in the Big Apple.
Shrugging off the thought, she slipped her script into her bag and stood, face still upturned toward the blazing sun. It was hard to believe she'd been out here since early morning. Her morning jogs often began here, and ended at her apartment . . . but today she'd skipped the run in favor of a walk. Alice felt like she rarely got the time to really look at things, and by the end of the morning, she was more than happy with her choice of a slower pace for today. It really was a lazy day, and for the first time in a long time, Alice felt relaxed. She needed more days like these, in fact, she craved them.
Shouldering her bag, the young woman walked off, farther into the grass -- leaving the benches and pavement behind. With the trees all around her, and the grass so lush underfoot, it was easy to forget she was actually in the heart of one of the world's largest cities, surrounded by millions of people. Dropping her bag, Alice smiled and sat down, leaning back and resting her head against her elbows -- sandals again abandoned for the sake of feeling the cool green grass beneath her feet. And she closed her eyes.
That's when the shadow fell across her, but Alice didn't bother to open her eyes.
“Hey,”
It was an unfamiliar voice that spoke, but at the word, she opened her eyes -- their blue vibrant against her pale skin. But she smiled, "Hey yourself," she answered, giving the young man a curious look over. He held a camera, and for a moment Alice wondered if she should be worried. But she wasn't one to fret over nothing -- he looked harmless enough. Handsome, even, but she leaned up, leaning back on her elbows and bringing one knee up to better see him, tucking a loose strand of blonde behind her ear.
“Sorry to bother you....but you have really nice cheekbones.”
She gave him a strange look for a moment, trying to figure out if this was some joke one of her friends had pulled -- but she ended up laughing, pleasant humor in her eyes, "Anyone willing to pay me a compliment is never a bother," she assured, studying him with new interest. Like, why was a stranger taking pictures of her? Well, at least he wasn't a stalker. Because what kind of stalker came up to you after taking your picture and complimented your cheekbones?
"Care to join me?" she asked after a second of thought. She sat up straighter, drawing her legs up to her chest and wrapping her arms around them, chin on her knees -- perfectly at ease. Strangers didn't faze her. And it would take a hell of a lot more than a cute guy with a camera to make her upset. "I don't bite . . . much," she teased. Her lazy day had just gotten slightly more interesting. And for that she was grateful . . . maybe he'd stick around for awhile and she wouldn't be forced to look over her lines yet again back at her boring apartment.
LOSE THEIR CHARM.

Few words could describe how pleased he was that the attractive, young blonde didn’t go awol on him. He knew how forward his comment had been but Bradbury was an honest man with a warm demeanour. He couldn’t help but give a compliment when he thought a compliment was due. His smile turned into a grin, a physical representation of his relief. He knew and expected questions to follow, they always did and he had all his answers on the ready. They sat on the tip of his tongue like an anchor and he had to fight to keep them from slipping out before their time. But what he didn’t expect was the invitation to join her in the bright green spring grass. Bradbury’s answer to it, however, was to simply plop himself and his long limbs beside her with the grace of a foal. Even after twenty-eight years he was never steady on his legs which, at times, felt more like stilts. “Thanks for the warning,”he smiled, lifting his camera from his neck and letting it sit on his lap, his backpack rested next to him.
“I’m Bradbury,”he said suddenly, sticking his large and calloused hand out at her and he added another smile with his name. “What brings you to Central Park on a fine day like today....or is that as stupid a question as I just realized?” He said, his eyes looking up at the clear, blue sky for half a beat before falling back on her. He assumed everyone in the park at that very moment, or at least the majority, were soaking up the thick, warm spring air and dazzling sun. After such a long and bitter winter, it was nice to go outside and feel and see life again.

Alice flicked her long blonde locks over her shoulder with a lazy hand, in no hurry to waste the day away by rushing around. Everyone else seemed to be relaxing and enjoying themselves, so why not she? The young woman smiled and moved so she was sitting cross-legged, half-wondering if he would be off again to snap more pictures. And she couldn't imagine all these New York natives offering similar invitations to the tall photographer. But he seemed pleased enough to accept, as a big, easy grin spreading across his face.
The next thing she knew, he was plopped down beside her.
"Anytime," she answered, her eyes playfully wicked. One of her favorite pastimes was messing with strangers -- using every situation she could to act. Slipping on someone else's skin had become almost an addiction for her, because she found her own life so dull . . . dull and slow. But today, she felt like she just wanted to be Alice. So no pranks, no gimmicks, no slipping behind a mask on this beautiful day. That made everything so much easier. And this man knew nothing about her . . . so she supposed it would be nice to chat with someone who wasn't expecting her to prove she had memorized her lines by reading them all off.
“I’m Bradbury,”
Alice easily clasped the hand suddenly offered to her with her own; smaller, but just as quick. Nothing fazed her. Her handshake was firm, and her smile warm, "Alice," she mused; her own familiar name rolled off of her tongue, but she was still stuck on his. Bradbury. It was interesting. Unique. She decided she liked it. "Or Allie, whatever you prefer." Alice wasn't a picky person, she never had been. But her nickname had been bestowed upon her by her older brother, who came up with it one day after she complained, as a girl, that Alice was simply some old lady's name -- that it would never do. She'd grown into it.
She followed his gaze skyward as he spoke, a laugh ringing in her voice as she brought her gray-blue gaze back to him, "Well, I happened to be looking for a photographer. And it looks like I found him," she teased, attention flicking to his camera briefly. "Is my picture going to show up in the New York Times or something? I feel like I should tell my friends if it is. I always wanted to be famous."
"I come here every morning. Do you come often?" she wondered, trying to remember if she might have seen him before. But one didn't typically forget such a tall man with a camera.

“Alice....Allie...”he murmured slowly, testing the two names he’d been offered. He preferred Alice. It was smoother, clearer, like fine cut glass. Allie made him think of a bubble gum popping pre-teen. “It’s nice to meet you, Alice,”adding in another friendly smile for good measure. Bradbury was quite like a dog again that way, his emotions were always easy to read on his face. His expressions quickly-changing and nearly cartoonish at times, his face had a bad habit of giving him away now and again.
“Oh really? A photographer? Why? ”he carefully raised an eyebrow, his hand resting on the camera on his lap. For a moment, his attention completely left Alice as something from over her shoulder caught his eye. He lifted the camera to his eye and took a few pictures before turning his attention back to his new acquaintance.
“Unfortunately, your picture will only grace bound to be undeveloped negatives, ”he continued as if he hadn’t stopped talking at all. He couldn’t help but wonder which category of New Yorker she fell into. A native? A student? A small town girl trying to make it big? An aspiring this or that? He figured the last option was the most likely but he said nothing of the sort, waiting to see if his simple guess rang true. “Or end up on my computer for eternity...sorry to disappoint,”lifting the camera again to snap another picture of her.
“This disappointment comes here when he can,”he answered, leaning back on his palms, balling his hands into fists around the neatly trimmed blades of grass. “What about you?" | WORDS: ~idk~ TAGS: alice chase/sky NOTES: things. CREDIT: LAIKA OF BTN! |

Alice smiled as her name, and her nickname, rolled off the stranger's tongue. The truth was, she preferred Alice, but some people automatically defaulted to Allie; with similar thoughts as her own had been at seven or eight years old. Back then, her parents had loved to dress her up as the Alice from Lewis Caroll's book -- every Halloween she would put on a blue dress and drag her cat Oliver around for the evening, collecting sweets. But she'd always insisted on being called Allie. Now, though, it was simply Alice. So she was glad when he decided to call her by that.
“Oh really? A photographer? Why? ”
Alice laughed, her smile again appearing as she leaned back on her hands, tucking stubborn blonde locks behind her ear. "Why not? I like having my picture taken," she replied, leaning her head back, and closing her eyes. Enjoying the sun. It really was lovely. Especially after that dreadfully long winter; she almost shivered in spite of herself, thinking back to her chilly apartment. The sun warmed her face while he spoke on, the curve of her lips gave the truthful indication that she was listening to the quick flow of his speech.
She opened her eyes at the resounding snap of his camera, and grinned at him. "Wistful thinking. What do you do then, with all these pictures? By now you must have photographed half of Manhattan," she replied smoothly, her hair falling gracefully around her face as she leaned forward and snatched the camera from his lap. She studied it in her hands a moment, before lifting it, "Someone should snap some of you once and awhile," she mused, a sly smile slipping across her features as she took one of him, then lowered her hands, head tilted as she studied him. "I should get a camera, I forgot how much fun it is." With school and her dedication to dance and theater, Alice had so little free time . . . it almost made her sad. All the things she'd used to do, all the friends who'd fell away, and what did she have to show for it? Her smile faded as she placed the camera delicately back in his lap, looking up towards the clouds.
“This disappointment comes here when he can,”
Alice lowered her chin to look at Bradbury squarely again, folding her hands back into her lap, fiddling with a blade of grass she'd plucked from the ground. "I jog here every morning. It's my second home," she answered. The first was the school stage, and the third, her lonely apartment. She avoided it as much as possible, and half the time considered moving. But she never did. "So do you take pictures for a living? Or is it just a hobby?"

“Places, yes. People, no,”he replied, not at all phased as she picked up his camera and tumbled it around in her hands and she took a picture of him. Like some photographers, he preferred to be behind the lens but he didn’t particularly mind getting his photograph taken. He did not worry for his camera in her hands, she seemed to have a steady grip and he already felt quite comfortable around her. Then again, he felt overly comfortable and at home around most strangers and in new places.
“I do it for school.” Placing the camera next to him on the grass, plucking out thin blades with idle and bored fingers. “A lot of of the pictures I take end up in school projects.” An upside to having hundreds of unused and undeveloped photographs, he constantly could snatch up any one when he didn’t feel like putting in any extra effort into a project. He would happily take photos on his own for hours but once it became a project worth a grade? Suddenly, he became exceptionally lazy. It was a problem, he knew, having the work habits of a teenage boy but he couldn’t help it. He may be near thirty but in many ways he still had a hell of a lot of growing up to do but, then again, he was independent in his own way. No, he wasn’t married. No, he didn’t have a ‘grown up’ job but he supported himself and he had for many, many years. “I’d like to do it for a living though....instead I make hipsters and rich middle aged women lattes for a living.”
Bradbury leaned forward on his knees, talking to her with a tone that suggested warmness often found in strong friendships. Everyone was a friend in Bradbury’s eyes until they proved otherwise, every stranger was worthy of a kind smile and easy, friendly manners and words. “What about you? What do you do, Blue?” The nickname slipped from his lips with a simple thought, based upon the dress of the fictional character that shared her name and her forget me not eyes.

Bradbury seemed . . . different. Different in a good way -- especially considering all the "different" people running around New York. She ran into them each and every day; and he was far from the strangest individual she'd ever met. His warm friendliness was a welcome change from the sour faces that clogged the streets of Manhattan and Queens, it made her feel human again. Twirling a piece of grass between her fingertips, she rested her elbows on her knees and listened to him with curious interest. Alice had found New York, mostly, to be full of busy, rude people, but she was happy to be reminded that she shouldn't let her cynicism get the best of her.
She was mildly surprised to hear he was still in school; something about his face suggested he was older, at least, that was what she had gathered so far during their brief conversation. "NYU?" she wondered, one brown arched in thought, "I go there. Too bad we're just meeting now, it would have been nice to have someone to come to the park with," Alice confessed, thinking of her classmates. Most of them had their nose up a textbook day in and day out, worrying over this paper and that exam. She'd always been more laid back; preferring to take everything in stride, and deal with any consequences as they came up. She was very rarely fazed.
“I’d like to do it for a living though....instead I make hipsters and rich middle aged women lattes for a living.”
Alice smiled, "Sounds just as exciting as my job. Except, well, more glamorous. I'm a bartender -- for now, anyway," she mused, frustrated by the very thought. It wasn't a bad thing, really, she just hated surrounding herself with drunken idiots on most nights. She chose waitressing when she could, but the owner always wanted her working the bar. If she argued, she'd no doubt lose her job, and it was really the only thing keeping food in the fridge right now; considering she refused any help from her parents or brothers.
Her eyes flickered with interest as Bradbury leaned closer, as if they were confidants; closer than two strangers who happened to meet one lovely day in Central Park. She liked that; liked how easy it was to like him, to talk with him, to trust him. The walls she usually surrounded herself with crumbled with his warm, easygoing smile.
“What about you? What do you do, Blue?”
Alice smirked at that; sooner or later, every acquaintance and friend always found a way. But Bradbury was more creative than most, and she appreciated it. She took a moment to consider the question; she knew what she wanted, the problem was, it was proving a difficult thing to grab. But then again, she'd never excepted life to hand her everything she wanted on a silver platter. "I dance," she answered simply, "I act. And in the meantime, serve a few drinks."
She hadn't realized that she'd leaned closer to him, meeting his gaze with her own curious blue one. "But my favorite thing to do is meet strangers in the park," she said with a teasing smile, ever playful in her humor. Suddenly, however, she was standing, offering him her hand, "I want to show you something -- care to follow me down the rabbit hole?"

What a small world New York was. By chance, he’d come and met a fellow attendee of his university....only, as far as he could tell, he was the average age of the students there while he was, according to society norms, supposed to be long out of any kind of schooling. Sometimes he forgot he wasn’t his fake age and that his face was beginning to make that simple but rather complicated lie harder to keep up with. He wasn’t sure if this meeting with Alice would become a friendship or if he’d never see her again. Whatever the unthought about future held, a part of him still couldn’t decide if he’d lie about his age to her too or be honest. Bradbury wasn’t one to think of the future, whether it be ten years from now or an hour, he liked to stay connected to the time, place and minute in which he currently resided. “What a funny coincidence,”Bradbury grinned, shaking his head slightly. “I’d say I’m surprised I’ve never seen you, but...well...the university does have nearly forty thousand students....” Sometimes he found it mind boggling that the population of his school had a larger population than thousands of cities and twenty-nine countries. Such facts constantly made Bradbury feel incredibly small and that was a feeling that the six foot four giant was not used to.
“We practically have the same job then.” Bradbury nearly laughed, a grin still plastered on his face. “We both help indulge the addictions of a crap ton of people.” Caffeine or alcohol, it was all the same. A guilty pleasure, a intense love and cravings for something that without the help of sugar or various syrups and artificial flavours tasted like absolute crap. However, since he started working at Starbucks, he’d become slightly and incredibly reliant upon caffeine. That’s what he told himself, anyways, he’d always been reliant upon caffeine but he liked to think it was better to blame it on his job than his own bad habit of staying up late watching scary movies like twelve year old boy.
Alice’s sudden change, however, caught him off guard. He liked the girl so far. She’d accepted the kind words of a stranger, she’d invited him to sit and speak with her. It seemed both had found a stranger that went against the grain, so unlike the usual people they ran into. “This mad hatter will gladly accompany you.” He dropped his camera into his knapsack, holding onto the strap with one hand and taking hers with the other and pulling himself to his feet. “Lead the way, Blue.”
It seemed his day was turning out much better than expected. | WORDS: 447 TAGS:alice chase/sky NOTES: i think the 29 country thing is accurate, i did a thing but idk if i counted right. CREDIT: LAIKA OF BTN! |

So maybe she would see him again. The fact that they went to the same school made that entirely possible, but he was right; there were over forty-thousand faces in the halls of NYU. He could easily get lost in the crowd, and she wasn't so sure she wanted to let him slip away just yet. Alice was tired of saying goodbye. It felt like she hadn't been a part of New York's social circle in some time; colleges students were fickle by nature, and her friends were no exception. Things were constantly coming up. Some left for home, some traveled abroad, it was always a new story. And dating? Well, not for some time. Her last relationship hadn't ended well. Not that she liked to think about it. But she was jumping ahead of herself; and in doing so, practically wishing the day away, when she was having a good time getting to know Bradbury. So she dropped her thoughts and smiled as he joined her.
"We do. Cheers to caffeine and alcohol -- and the addictions that get us our salaries," she laughed, blue eyes sparkling with amusement. She plucked her bag from the ground and drew it up and across her shoulder; forgetting the script inside. For a moment, she looked over his face, as if trying to fit him someplace in her memory. She liked Starbucks, but the fact was she didn't have the money for it. She saved everything she could, because in all honesty, NYU was going to end up costing her an arm and a leg. But her cravings were known to crush her resolves, and Alice was prone to making late night coffee runs; to get her through papers, and stressful practices. And of course coffee always went well with a good movie. Particularly a good SyFy movie. She was a sucker for horror movies; her dad had started her on them young, to his wife's distress. By now, at twenty-two, she was hopelessly addicted.
“This mad hatter will gladly accompany you.”
Alice smiled as he played along. She tossed her golden locks over her shoulder and beamed pleasantly at her willing companion; making it obvious she approved of her new nickname. Alice was hardly predictable; she loved anything unexpected and relished in surprises. Moving ahead, she turned around, walking backwards, to flash him a wicked smile, "We have to leave the path to get there -- do you trust me?" there was bemusement in her expression as she turned on a time, heading off into the trees -- into the thick shade where sunlight streamed in beautiful golden shafts down through an emerald canopy. It would a little walk, but it was certainly worth it. And she was almost completely sure Bradbury would appreciate her little adventure. She often wandered away from the paths herself, against her better judgement, but with Bradbury, there was certainly nothing to fear. Despite his gentleness, there was something reassuring rather than intimidating about his height and build. If she felt safe on her own, she wouldn't have a problem walking beside him.
Slowing her teasing pace to walk beside him, she glanced up at Bradbury, thinking to pass the time chatting again, "So are you from New York? Or are you an outsider like me?" she asked, curious. New Yorkers seemed to have a knack for sensing foreigners like her. It was like the city was a microcosm unto itself -- and everything was in some way backwards and topsy-turvy. There was something alluring about it all; but then again, Alice looked for adventure in every corner. The people weren't always the nicest, but the city itself was never less than fascinating.

Trust was a very odd thing. At time, Bradbury had little to no trust in friends he’d had for ages and, yet, was very willing to put trust in this girl he’d known for barely any time at all. And that was the whole point. In knowing his friends so well, he knew who and who was not reliable but with a stranger, what other choice did you have? Maybe his occasional thoughtlessness when flatly accepting the kindness of strangers was a fault but he liked to think otherwise.
Besides, Bradbury decided he had little to fear with this girl. She seemed kind enough, genuine enough and that was good enough for him. “I do,”he nodded, following her lead to this secret place of hers. He was quite curious and he hoped that this wonderful little place would be worthy of a good few photographs.
“Born and raised,”he grinned with a slight shrug, both hands shoved lazily into the pockets of his jeans. “I’m from Chelsea,”he added, looking down as he kicked a stone as they walked, watching as it stumbled out of his reach. “Frankly, she’s quite a good girl...attractive...where abouts are you from? “ Bradbury was undeniably in love with Chelsea, Manhattan. Maybe it was because he knew little else, maybe it was because of the deep nostalgia that kept him rooted there. Whatever the reason, he knew the West side borough like the back of his hand. Which meant he was still frequently, at twenty eight years old, getting himself lost. The man was a broken compass with little hope of ever being repaired.

Alice wandered through the trees, weaving between them -- remembering days spent hiking with her brothers. Being in the woods was almost like being on stage; you had to have a certain movement, a grace to get you over the roots and rocks, and Alice had it. She never tripped, never faltered, and never slowed. There was a warmth knowing Bradbury was along for the ride; she was excited. None of her friends would appreciate what she was showing him, and she'd never bothered to take them. They typically weren't outdoorsy people, but were rather more comfortable in their sky-high apartments sipping coffee that Bradbury or some other Starbucks employee probably served them. But where was the adventure in that? Where was the fun in the same old thing every day? Normalcy bored Alice. She was only happy with the extraordinary.
“I do,”
The young woman glanced over her shoulder to offer him a smile, never missing a beat. Her gaze soon returned to the invisible path before her, her golden hair cascading down her back. Getting there meant taking a new path every time, but it was always worth it. It was the one, true haven Alice had found in this giant city. And she'd never seen anyone else there, even when it wasn't at all hard to find. She had to smile at that; right under their noses, and the Central Park goers didn't even know what they were missing.
She listened to Bradbury as he spoke in answer to her question and nodded, a small smile on her face. On of intrigue. What was it like to grow up in, essentially, the center of the world? One of the largest, and perhaps the most well known, urban area from sea to shining sea. Her whole life, New York had always been a dream; something glamorous she saw a few times on TV every year when her parents switched on the Macey's Day Parade, or the ball drop for New Year's Eve. So when she arrived for the first time, she'd been starstruck by its sheer enormity, and the masses of people wandering the streets. It still amazed her. Living in the suburbs, you felt like a giant -- but here . . . you were only an ant. One of millions of ants.
Alice smiled as he talked about his Chelsea. It sounded like he really loved the place, "I've never really been there, you'll have to show me sometime," she replied, taking a moment to step over a rather large root as he asked where she was from. "I'm from a little town outside of Chicago. You've probably never heard of it, we're a speck on the map," she answered with a grin. Her hometown might be puny, but it was still home.
As they continued walking, Alice was content with the quiet -- taking the chance to listen to the birdsong above their heads. It wasn't much farther, as they drew nearer, she slowed, "Didn't drop your camera did you? You're going to want it," she said with an excited smile. She was always happy when someone came on one of her little outings. It wasn't often she had someone so willing to put up with her random escapades. Because they were never predictable -- they were spontaneous and unexpected, just like she was.
She moved past the rest of the bushes, and walked into a little clearing. It was a rich, green field full of wildflowers of every color in full bloom. There was a little lake in the middle of it all, really more of a pond; but there were always lilies floating on its crystal surface. And a giant elm stood sentry over the vibrant blue water. The air was sweet, a sharp contrast to the industrial scent of downtown New York. Alice absolutely loved it.
As she looked across the flowers, her eyes fell upon a singular white rabbit crouched near the bank of the water -- nibbling at some grass. She couldn't help but laugh and roll her eyes skyward, "How ironic," she mused, her attention finally flicking to Bradbury -- eager to see what he thought.

“Maybe I will...”he replied, his voice distant as his light eyes wandered around the path she was leading them down. O rather, the makeshift path. Bradbury liked adventures. Rather, he loved them. He liked...loved the unknown, the unexpected, the unseen and unexplored. It engulfed his life. He had a fascination with things that were hard to grasp or understand. Things that shook humanity and made them wonder and weep. He loved anything full of doom and anything that could make your average conservative go mad. He loved things that people truly could not understand. He loved unanswered questions.
Which was why a part of him thought maybe never to find out Alice’s full name, to never see her again and only share with her a perfect afternoon in a hidden cove. Than she would be a mystery forever unsolved and forever questioned but, a larger part of him, wanted to know the stranger with forget me not eyes and hay coloured hair.
When they arrived in her secret, magical place Bradbury’s jaw slacked. He would never of thought such a place existed alongside the golden smog and cursing taxi drivers. He loved it instantly. “Wow,”he muttered, following it with a satisfied whistle as he brought his camera to his eye and began to capture the oasis forever in film.
“How’d you find this place?’wandering away from her as he snapped pictures, crouching for better close up shots now and again. He was completely enamoured and only spared her a glance away from his beloved camera that lasted but a short second.
Yes, yes he had to know this Alice. He would be her white rabbit and show her all the perks of the urban wonderland that was New York City. | WORDS:A NUMBER TAGS:alice chase/sky NOTES: DERP CREDIT: LAIKA OF BTN! |

Alice took a moment to just take it all in; she'd been here dozens of times, but it never ceased to take her breath away. There was something about the little slice of Central Park that reminded her of home. Of days gone by; lazy summer days spent with her brothers, and later her friends. The only thing was, she'd never had many of those. Her few close friends had taken off from her hometown had taken off straight after graduation; eager to leave the little suburb behind. Alice had spent a few months trying to decide where to go, feeling lost without them, before she'd gathered her own courage -- and set off for New York.
There was something open and friendly about her, but Alice's calm waters ran deep. She was spontaneous and fun loving, but at the same time a little reserved; and then there was the unusual way she perceived everything . . . she was unique. She was the type of person people should expect the unexpected from. And most people shied away from that; but Alice embraced it.
“Wow,”
At his low whistle of appreciation, she beamed -- pushing back blonde locks being tugged at by the wind. She was glad she brought him, glad she had someone to share her delightful discovery with. Maybe she'd found a new partner in crime; but then again, everything in good time. The young woman walked through the field, her right hand extended to lightly brush the tips of the tall blades of grass; feeling the silky kiss of petals against her palm. She couldn't help but glance over her shoulder to watch him, smiling at the way he became so absorbed in capturing the beauty all around them. A laugh escaped her as he spared her a brief glance, her eyes following him, sparkling with warm humor.
She turned and continued walking through the colorful field, closing her eyes to feel the sun against her lids. It was impossible to see even the tallest skyscrapers here; trees lifted up their branches, heavily laden with rich green leaves, blocking out all hints of urbanization. They muffled the sounds of car horns, crisp swears, and the booming televisions that lit up Times Square. It was easy to forget that all of that surrounded them. Basking in that, Alice wandered down toward the water, slipping off her bag, and taking a seat at the bank. She folded her legs to the side and glanced back at Bradbury, smiling at his interest, "How else does Alice find Wonderland but by falling down a rabbit hole?" she asked, teasing. "Completely by accident, actually. I like . . . wandering," she confessed, unabashed. It wasn't the smartest thing, a young woman wandering alone in a city she didn't quite know. But that wouldn't stop her.
Alice let her gaze linger on Bradbury as he snapped and clicked to his delight. She smiled to herself and plucked one of the flowers, absently rolling its stem between her fingers, before lifting it to her nose.
"Think you'll have any good shots?"

"Of course..."Bradbury nodded, stumbling back a few feet over uneven ground as he managed to capture pictures of the tops of the trees and skyscrapers, hanging over the wildflowers and pond. Even after twenty eight years, he still wasn't use to his long limbs. It was hard to stay coordinated when walking on stilts, even if they were your own legs. "Well, blue, I sure am glad you wander and I hope that I can remember how we got here." He would not forget about this place now that he found it, already planning to turn as the little oasis changed with the seasons. He had countless places around the city that he visited multiple times a year to document their appearance throughout the year. He'd been working on it for ages and hoped to use it as a project sometime in the near future.
He looked down at her, moving the camera away from his face. "I'm sure I will..."trailing off to quickly snap a picture of her. "You look quite a bit like Alice....at least, I think so." Finally he plopped himself down next to her in the grass, leaning back on his hands.
"So, Miss.Alice,"he tilted his head, watching her intently. "In your wandering, have you found any other places like this? If so, you're gonna have to share them with me." Even if she hadn't stumbled upon any other magical little places, he was still intent on wandering around with her through New York eventually.
